Own proxy vs proxy lists

Public proxy lists are slow, dead, or hostile — often all three. A proxy on your own VPS has one user (you), a dedicated IP whose reputation you build, unmetered traffic, and root to change ports, auth, and protocol. Nobody resells your endpoint’s bandwidth.

Setup paths

• SOCKS5: Dante or 3proxy — ten lines of config, username/password auth.
• HTTP(S): Squid or tinyproxy with basic auth and ACLs.
• Tunneled: SSH -D or a WireGuard endpoint when the client side can speak a VPN protocol.

Fair-use boundaries

A private proxy is for your own automation, monitoring, and geo-testing. Mail spamming, credential stuffing, scraping that breaks laws, and attacks are prohibited by the AUP — and practically, they burn the IP you just built reputation for.
