Why a no-KYC VPS for Mastodon
You run the instance: ActivityPub, Postgres, Redis, Sidekiq, media. NovaVPS is KVM with root, token-only or email signup, crypto invoice, no passport, selfie, or phone. Catalog floor is Nano (1 vCPU / 2 GB ECC / 40 GB NVMe / unmetered 1 Gbps / $5.49/mo) in thirteen locations. Follow Mastodon admin: install. We rent the VM; we do not operate your Fediverse node.
VPS from $5.49/mo. Token-only or email + password, then a crypto invoice.

TODO: Mastodon RSS and media growth are not measured in this repo. RAM/NVMe columns below are editorial estimates only (conservative ranges). Map the estimate to the nearest SKU in data.py; do not treat the range as a published Mastodon SLA.
| Local users | RAM (estimate) | NVMe (estimate) | NovaVPS plan (catalog) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ~10 | TODO: 2–4 GB | TODO: 40–80 GB (media stays small) | Starter — 2 vCPU / 4 GB DDR4 ECC / 60 GB NVMe / unmetered 1 Gbps / $8.50/mo. Nano (2 GB / 40 GB / $5.49/mo) is the floor if you accept swap risk. |
| ~100 | TODO: 8–16 GB | TODO: 120–240 GB | Plus — 4 vCPU / 8 GB DDR4 ECC / 120 GB NVMe / unmetered 2.5 Gbps / $13.50/mo, or Business — 6 vCPU / 16 GB DDR5 ECC / 240 GB NVMe / unmetered 5 Gbps / $20.00/mo |
| 1000+ | TODO: 24–32 GB+ (Postgres + Sidekiq + media cache) | TODO: 400 GB–1 TB+ media; split object storage if needed | Pro — 8 vCPU / 24 GB DDR5 ECC / 400 GB NVMe / $27.50/mo; Max — 12 vCPU / 32 GB DDR5 ECC / 640 GB NVMe / unmetered 10 Gbps / $34.50/mo. Media-heavy: Storage 1 — 8 GB / 1 TB NVMe / $30.00/mo (RAM may be tight — pair or resize; TODO: confirmed split-role topology). Exclusive queues: Dedicated from $89.50/mo (32 GB / 2×1 TB NVMe). |
L3/L4 DDoS is included. Editable PTR is in the panel. Same list price in all thirteen cities — pick latency for your users, not a slogan.
Fediverse privacy
No-KYC checkout is the billing layer. It is not end-to-end privacy for ActivityPub.
- Public posts federate. Remote instances copy public toots, profiles, and often media. Your host never seeing a passport does not stop those copies.
- DMs are not Matrix-class E2E. Instance admins (you, on this VPS) can read local database contents. Remote servers that receive a DM store their own copy. For rooms that should stay on servers you choose, run a Matrix homeserver instead of or beside Mastodon.
- Media and caches leak metadata. Hotlinking, remote media proxy, and preview cards pull URLs off-box. Size NVMe for local media; assume remotes keep thumbnails.
- Where the RAM sits is process, not a legal shield. Company domicile is Saint Kitts and Nevis; the VM is in one of thirteen locations. Do not invent takedown or logs outcomes. Connection metadata ≤24h then dropped is stated in the privacy policy; no payload/guest traffic logs; billing/panel actions retained. TODO: billing/panel retention period.
OPSEC leftover (wallet reuse, personal domain WHOIS, leaking the origin IP) is on how anonymous NovaVPS is.
Recommended setup
Plan: Starter for ~10 users (4 GB / 60 GB NVMe, $8.50/mo); Business when the 100-user estimate applies. Install: Mastodon admin: install. Open 80/443; federation uses HTTPS. Nested virt is on if you wrap the stack in Docker.
Self-host Mastodon from $5.49/mo — token-only, no KYC, crypto invoice.
Launch StarterDo you require KYC to host Mastodon?
No. No passport, selfie, or phone. Token-only or email + password, then a crypto invoice or prepaid balance.
How much RAM and NVMe for 10, 100, or 1000+ users?
TODO: unverified Mastodon sizing. Editorial map to data.py: ~10 → Starter 4 GB / 60 GB NVMe ($8.50); ~100 → Plus 8 GB / 120 GB or Business 16 GB / 240 GB; 1000+ → Pro/Max 24–32 GB / 400–640 GB NVMe, or Storage 1 TB+ / Dedicated if media or queues need it.
Is a self-hosted Mastodon instance private on the Fediverse?
Public posts and media federate to remote servers. Local DMs sit in your Postgres and on receiving instances. No-KYC hosting does not encrypt ActivityPub. Use a Matrix homeserver when you need tighter server-to-server control.
Which coins can I pay with?
Same checkout as other VPS: Bitcoin, USDT (ERC-20 and TRC-20), and the other coins on the invoice page. No cards.
Ready to launch?
Configure a VPS or dedicated server, set a password, then pay the invoice.
