The ownership difference

A commercial VPN shifts trust from your ISP to the VPN company — you still share an exit with hundreds of strangers, and the provider can see your metadata. A self-hosted WireGuard endpoint on your own VPS has a single user: you. Nothing to sell, no shared-IP CAPTCHAs, no logs policy to believe — there is no one else's traffic to log.

When the VPS wins

• Personal traffic privacy from your ISP/network — the common case.
• A stable IP for services that block shared VPN ranges (banking, some APIs).
• Site-to-site access: your own homelab, NAS, or team resources.

When the subscription still wins

• Streaming-region games — commercial pools have the IPs catalogs accept.
• Anonymity through crowd-mixing — a solo IP identifies you by usage; combine with Tor for that layer.

Setup: the WireGuard playbook takes ~15 minutes on any plan; Starter is plenty for a personal tunnel. For mixed needs, run your own WG endpoint plus a commercial VPN client on the same device — they solve different layers.
